A person should also be alerted by constant thirst, dry mouth, weakness, copious and frequent urination and taste of metal in the mouth.
Diabetes mellitus is a very common disease, which only in Russia suffers about 20% of the population. The disease can be caused by the fact that the pancreas does not produce enough insulin hormone or the human body does not respond to insulin. Without it, the body struggles to convert blood sugar into useful energy.
Many people are at risk and do not even know about it, and if this disease is noticed in the early stages, it can still be corrected. Recently, doctors have called the first sign of diabetes.
A person may be at risk if he constantly feels hungry, even after a large amount of food. According to Dr. Matthew Capehorn from the UK, the feeling of hunger after dinner is a warning sign of high blood sugar. He also believes that the feeling of satiety should be present within 4-5 hours. In general, a constant feeling of hunger should be alarming.
In addition, the alarming "bells" should be constant thirst, dry mouth, weakness, fatigue, abundant and frequent urination and taste of metal in the mouth.
At the slightest suspicion of diabetes, experts recommend to consult a doctor to avoid undesirable consequences.

Why is hunger in diabetes?
The mechanism of nutrition of cells consists in the supply of glucose to them, which is a “food” for their further activity. Insulin produced by the pancreas is responsible for the delivery of this compound. In diabetes mellitus, there is a shortage of insulin or its improper perception by the cells, which is perceived as a signal to the brain that the tissues receive less nutrients. In order to stabilize the situation, the body begins to provoke a feeling of hunger.
In case of type 1 diabetes mellitus, insulin deficiency occurs and the situation can be remedied by compensating for this deficiency with other sources of the hormone. This may be insulin therapy, nutrition correction, lifestyle. A persistent feeling of hunger in type 2 diabetes is explained by the inability of cells to absorb existing insulin, which also leads to an elevated glucose concentration. In such cases, selected special drug therapy with the selection of optimal drugs.
How to reduce the feeling of hunger?
In usual ways, the lack of food is not compensated, since it is important to eliminate the provoking factor. In the case of pathologies associated with glycemia, the fundamental effect should be the normalization of sugar levels. This can be done with the help of drug therapy or the introduction of insulin, it all depends on the type of supportive treatment.
If any therapy is already being applied to correct glucose levels, but the sugar indices are too high, then more effective methods are chosen together with the endocrinologist. In addition to using selected methods of keeping blood sugar levels, a constant feeling of hunger in diabetes is reduced by the following actions:
- You need to eat in small portions, but often, on average, five times, of which three are the main, and the rest are snacks.
- Selection of consumed products relative to the glycemic index, namely the effect of carbohydrates on changes in glucose levels. There are special product tables that make it easier to select the right menu.
- Normalization of weight. Excess body fat complicates the already problematic assimilation of glucose, so you need to keep your weight normal. To do this, select the optimal diet, which must contain plant products. They contain a lot of fiber, vitamins and trace elements that positively affect the endocrine system, gastrointestinal tract and in general the metabolic processes.
- Physical exercise. You can pick up a special gymnastics, make it a rule to walk a certain distance. A good option is swimming, fitness, dancing and other loads that help stimulate blood flow, and thus improve cell nutrition.
- Sufficient fluid. With diabetes, the feeling of thirst often increases and does not need to be suppressed, although later urination often occurs. Together with the liquid, part of the glucose is removed from the body, which also helps to reduce it in the blood. It is better to choose clean water, tea and other drinks, but only natural ones, without artificial additives and sugar.
If the feeling of hunger after eating with diabetes does not go away, even with the normalization of sugar levels, then perhaps the causes of this phenomenon are in an emotional state. There is a risk of development and pathological processes in the digestive system, the thyroid gland, for example, in hyperthyroidism, as well as in other causes, which must be clarified. An observant doctor or therapist who can be informed about the accompanying symptoms will be able to help in this; he will already direct him to a specialist.
There is an opinion about the benefits of fasting in diabetes, if it happens in consultation with the doctor, under the supervision of medical staff in case of unforeseen reactions of the body. Consumption of many products is limited, but the drinking regime remains stable, at least 2-3 liters per day. Medical fasting lasts at least a week. The purpose of the method is to reduce the load, including on the liver, pancreas, which should lead to changes in metabolic processes, and according to the experience of some clinics and to a decrease in blood sugar.
Fighting hunger in diabetes alone is extremely undesirable, since complications are possible not only from the underlying disease, but also from possible developing pathologies. The best option is to contact a specialist with the subsequent adjustment of therapy, including with respect to medications that affect the concentration of insulin in the body.
In the end, you start your day around with this amount of sugar:
- 11 grams of sugar per 100 grams of oatmeal (plus 2 grams of fiber, which somewhat slows down its absorption)
- 17 grams of sugar from a tablespoon of honey
- 4.5 grams of sugar from about 50 grams of strawberries
- 20 grams of sugar from the juice (the fact that it is freshly squeezed, does not cancel the sugar content, approximately equal to its content in carbonated drinks like Coca-Cola)
Total: about 50 grams of sugar on an empty stomach, which for most of us = a significant jump in blood sugar levels. (fructose and glucose, which make up the sugar here, are digested differently, but ultimately increase insulin resistance).
Then the situation often develops according to this scenario: the pancreas begins to produce insulin, but, as often happens with sharp jumps in sugar, it produces more than necessary. Insulin “removes” the available means of excess sugar from the blood, but due to errors in the calculation, a little more than necessary, and now after a couple of hours, despite the number of calories eaten, the sugar level in your blood is below optimal, hunger has returnedmay have been added feeling of weakness and irritation, headache or simply lack of clarity of thinking.
If this is only a one-time event, then such a situation is not threatened with destabilization - they have a snack with something and have forgotten about discomfort. But now imagine that this situation is repeated regularly - because juice and croissant for breakfast is quite common (I remember 15 years ago my favorite breakfast was a box of Ferrero Rocher ...). Over time, the jumps in blood sugar levels and the attempts of insulin to shove them into cells begin to irritate them (cells), and in response they become less sensitive to these attempts, that is, they develop insulin resistance. Eventually insulin is required to produce more to work with the same amount of sugar - in other words, your insulin rises.
And our sugar “jumps”, and insulin hardly copes with maintaining a certain level of sugar in the blood. He often can’t break through into the cells anymore, and as a result they can remain without an energy source, even when the blood sugar level is too high, which at the level of our well-being is transmitted by a state of weakness and other symptoms described above, including a very short time later after meal.
Everyone copes with such symptoms in his own way, but among the most common methods: drinking their coffee (in large quantities, among other things, coffee can aggravate cell insulin resistance), further snacks (including sweet ones, which only closes the vicious circle), tension and stress due to attempts to restrain negative emotions.
Moreover, such methods only aggravate the condition:
- swinging the “sugar pendulum”, reducing the sensitivity of cells to insulin and increasing its secretion
- expanding hormonal imbalance, involving in the process other metabolic hormones: cortisol, leptin
- provoking the development of inflammatory processes
- stimulating disproportionate growth of sugar-eating pathogenic microflora
It may sound scary, but this is not to scare me, but to the fact that if your children or loved ones have similar symptoms, keep in mind that the matter may not be personal, but in completely tangible biochemical processes that in most cases can be changed by changing the power.
What changes when for breakfast instead of a croissant you eat cottage cheese, eggs, whole grain cereal with nuts or something like that? Your sugar level remains stable, you get a charge of nutrients for vivacity and productive mental activity (as opposed to a nutrient poor croissant) and with time lower insulin levelsthat is just a prerequisite for a “soft” feeling of hunger.
With a low level of insulin, the production of his partner begins. glucagon hormone (not to be confused with glycogen - a form of sugar for storage in muscles and liver). Glucagon mobilizes for energy production fatty acids from our often excess reserves and the aforementioned glycogen from the liver to the joy of all slimming. Just think: not a life, but a dream: you are longer than usual sitting on a plane without food and instead sharp feelings of hunger and nervousness you feel light and in parallel you burn the fat accumulated by inhuman labors!
Yes, and another interesting fact to note the hostess: guess what is common, according to the results of numerous scientific studies, found in long-livers: people and other animals? Low insulin! Further it is clear, in what direction it is worth directing efforts.
Does all this mean that carbs should be avoided like the plague, and have only eggs for breakfast? No, it’s rather an invitation to more consciously approach one’s well-being, understand what influences it, and respond constructively to the signs it gives us. Well, the fact that food - is power.
