In a large meta-analysis published in Lancet last year, scientists found that statins increase the risk of developing diabetes by 9 percent. This is extremely important because millions of prescriptions are written every day to reduce cholesterol levels in the elderly, but no association has been found between higher cholesterol levels and death from cardiovascular diseases in people aged 55 to 84 years, and for those who are over 85 years old, we see the opposite - a higher level of cholesterol shows a lower risk of death from heart disease.
The pharmaceutical industry, medical associations, and scientific researchers, whose budgets are sponsored by pharmaceutical grants, continue to preach the wonders of statins, but studies like these should make us pay closer attention. Are we doing more harm than good?
Cardiologists recommend introducing statins into water and offering them at fast food restaurants, as well as having them available through the counter, thereby believing that this will lower cholesterol as low as possible. Statins are ineffective in primary heart attack.
Recently, an international group of independent scientists from the Cochrane Group reviewed all of the major statin studies. The review did not reveal the benefits of using statins to prevent heart attacks and death. If scientists had discovered that taking two glasses of water in the morning would prevent heart attacks, even with weak evidence, we would have jumped at the idea. Some advantages, minimum losses.

As it turned out, statins reduce inflammation, so the study was regarded as evidence of the effectiveness of these drugs. But keep in mind that they do not reduce cholesterol (for which statins are discharged), but only relieve inflammation. And people using this study as evidence of statin intake ignore the fact that drugs are much better than these.
However, other studies did not reveal the proven benefits of statins in healthy women with high cholesterol or anyone over 69 years of age. Some studies even show that aggressive cholesterol lowering can cause MORE heart disease. The ENHANCE test showed that aggressive cholesterol treatment with two drugs (Zokor and Zetia) reduced cholesterol levels much more effectively than a single drug, however, resulted in more arterial platelets and did not reduce the risk of heart attacks.
Other studies have questioned our focus on LDL or bad cholesterol. We are focusing on this, since we have good drugs to reduce it, but this is not the problem. The real problem is the low level of HDL (high density lipoprotein), which is caused by insensitivity to insulin (diabetes, or diabetes).
In fact, studies show that if you lower the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) in people with low levels of HDL (good cholesterol), which is an indicator of diabetes - leading to obesity, prediabetes and diabetes - then there is no benefit.
Most people simply ignore the fact that 50-75% of people suffering from heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels. A study on heart disease in Honolulu showed that older patients with lower cholesterol have a higher risk of death than patients with higher cholesterol.
For some patients with multiple risk factors or with previous heart attacks, these drugs are beneficial, but if you look closely, the results are not impressive. This is all a numbers game. For high-risk men (overweight and high blood pressure, diabetes, and / or a family history of heart attacks), and they are younger than 69 years old, there is some evidence of the benefits of these drugs, but 100 men need treatment to prevent only one heart attack.
This means that 99 out of 100 men taking the drug do not receive any benefit. Advertisers of the drug say that it reduces risk by 33 percent. It sounds good, but it just means that the risk of a heart attack is reduced from 3 percent to 2 percent.
Despite extensive evidence that statins are dubious therapy at best, they are still the # 1 drug in the United States. What is not so well known is that 75 percent of statin prescriptions are written to people who do not get proven benefits. What is the total cost of these recipes? More than 20 billion dollars a year.
However, in 2004, the National Cholesterol Study Programs expanded the previous recommendations, advising that even more people without heart disease take statins (from 13 to 40 million). What are we thinking about?
Why do respected scientists go against the overwhelming results of research that statins do not prevent heart disease in people who have not yet had a heart attack?
The answer is money. Eight of the nine experts in the group who developed these guidelines had financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry. Thirty-four other non-professional affiliated experts petitioned against the recommendations of the National Institute of Health expressing that the evidence was weak.
What should women do?
The time has come to bring this immutable concept of the benefits of statins to clean water. But first, let me say something. If you have had a heart attack or heart disease, the evidence shows that statins do help prevent a second heart attack, so keep taking them.

Dr. Kirsten Johansen of the University of California at San Francisco said that an increased risk of developing diabetes in women without heart disease has “ important implications for the balance of risk and benefit of statins in terms of primary prevention, which show that previous meta-analyzes do not bring any benefit from overall mortality ».
In simple words, she said that women without heart disease should not use statin drugs, because:

The current study does not explain how the increase in cholesterol will affect the speed of heart attacks and mortality in women during menopause.
